LYNN WIGGINTON

As an artist I have chosen to explore the “sense of place” embodied in both the landscape and the built heritage of Atlantic Canada. My paintings are not imaginary or metaphoric but are rather literal studies that attempt to capture the powerful and resonant reality of our Maritime experience. While often drawing on elements from our past, my paintings are accurate portrayals of a particular present moment. The unspoken question they invariably raise is: What will this scene look like in ten, fifteen, fifty, maybe a hundred years from now? Time and place, then, are central undercurrents to my art.

Like many other Atlantic Canadian artists, I have chosen to work in “the realist tradition”. While many may see this as a constraint, I have been able to push and pull the boundaries of this style to suit my personal vision. As a student, my focus was on printmaking. My paintings still possess a linear quality reminiscent of a printmaker and I still build colour in layers to achieve subtleties and nuances of tone and colour temperature that add depth and luminosity to my work. I am always trying to uncover and highlight the magical effects of light, shadow, reflection, texture, depth and colour. I feel that it is important for an artist to create works that engage the viewer in a shared and meaningful visual experience. While striving to capture a particular landscape, street scene or architectural detail, I hope that the viewer will see not only what is, but what might be lost.”
