Philip Iverson was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1965. He graduated from Mount Alison University with a BFA in 1990 and taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design from 1997-2001.  Philip Iverson’s work, influenced by Beckman, Kokoschka, Willem de Kooning, Picasso and Frank Stella, focuses on the exaggerated and distorted figure to reveal inner emotions. His raw talent burst through the energetically charged portraits and landscapes and in its untrammeled beauty is the embodiment of art. Iverson’s brush movements were fast, furious and unpredictable. His work reflects a process where the unconscious is manifested in a landscape of the mind or a visual narration that like the spoken word exists in its own context of the moment. His images leave no room for subtlety and often one painting will reveal the entire spectrum from turbulent fear and alienation to tranquility and happiness.

Philip Iverson exhibited widely throughout Canada and had three major exhibitions at prestigious galleries in Germany in 2005 and 2006. His paintings were also featured at Art Karlsruhe, an international art fair in Germany in 2006. Iverson’s huge installation The Boat was first exhibited at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery; after his death The Boat was installed in the cafeteria – auditorium of the Leo Hayes High School in Fredericton. It is the city’s largest piece of public art and continues to impact students, teachers and visitors alike. He died at the age of 41, in Montreal, from brain cancer.
