Brian Burke was born and raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and has the island in his blood. PEI and the surrounding water figure in his paintings in every emotional form possible. His feeling for colour is minimal but elegant. He doesn’t use a great deal of paint and he spreads it thin, but the depth and the surfaces he achieves are his alone. Burke’s work is based on existentialism and alienation; the quandary of existence and the isolation of alienation. Each painting is a narrative, a story that comes from deep within the soul. Whether it is based on a real occurrence or not, is not of importance. The relevance lies in the anxiety it causes, or the happiness it can bring.
